What is the Media Maker's Lab?
The Media Maker's Lab is a small-scale flexible space where aspiring
entrepreneurs, engineers and artists come together to explore connections
between technology, music, sound, visual arts and movement. It is a low-stakes
community of learners, where experimentation is encouraged and failure is seen as a
necessary step in an iterative process of produced design, fabrication and
innovation. Our lab is rooted in constructionist theories pioneered by Seymour
Papert and others.
Equipment:
- A Mac M4 running Ableton Live Suite, Max
9, Logic Pro, Fusion 360, Adobe and lots of open-source software such as Pd, Blender,
and much more
- Raspberry Pi 5 computer running Debian Linux
- Modular synthesizer with many modules by Pittsburgh Modular
- X-Tronic soldering station
- Siglent oscilloscope, DC voltage generator and signal generator for electronics prototyping and fabrication
- Heavy-duty workbenches
- Prusa MK4S 3D printer (and a second Prusa MK4 backup printer)
- A four-channel audio studio system
- Singer HD-4432 heavy duty sewing machine
- Tons of electronics components
- Book and reference collection
- Free coffee
We invite speakers to tell us about their work, and hosting
noontime workshops in the lab to teach topics ranging from the Linux command
line, to basic 3D modeling, to simple electronics fabrication, to basic
textile construction.
